Mable Owens Clarke of Soapstone Church cutting flowers
Mable Owens Clarke, the matriarch of Soapstone Church and it's famous fish fry in South Carolina, cutting beautiful Limelight Hydrangeas to decorate the tables at the regular Sunday fish fry. An outtake from an editorial food story about a Black church trying to save itself by raising funds from church fish frys. The cemetery attached to it holds the graves of enslaved persons, making it especially important to the local Black community. Photographed for Eating Well magazine.
